Drug Rehabilitation

If drugs (such as methadone or antidepressants) are used during drug rehabilitation, then is it really rehabilitation, or just switching one drug for another?

Yeah, that can of worms just got opened. Well, SOMEBODY had to do it.

A “knee-jerk” reaction to that question might be, “Well, no, it isn’t. The whole idea of drug rehabilitation is to get a person OFF drugs, right?”

Well, consider these questions: what caused the drug addiction in the first place? Was it a result of experimenting with drugs, or did the patient become addicted to painkillers or some other prescription drug? Is there a “dual diagnosis” (drug abuse as well as an underlying mental problem, such as bipolar disorder or depression caused by a chemical imbalance) involved?

Here’s a biggie: what about a baby that is born addicted because of the mother’s drug abuse? Does that baby have to lie there and suffer through the exact same withdrawal symptoms as any drug user out there, when methadone or a similar drug might bring that innocent victim some relief?

There may not be any one RIGHT answer to any of the above questions. And, if by some possibility there IS a right answer, who’s to say it’s THE right answer for everyone?

Think about this: there are some people out there who can literally have a root canal without benefit of ANY anesthesia; there are others who have to “take the gas” just to get their teeth cleaned! So, wouldn’t it stand to reason that one person could go through drug rehabilitation without medication, while another person may need methadone and anything else that can be had?Anybody want to help put the lid back on the can of worms?
