Drug addiction not only affects the person who is suffering from it, it also affects family members and friends. It may be the last thing that anyone may want to face or admit, but it cannot be ignored.

Often, it is the family or a friend who notices the first signs. The person who is abusing drugs or alcohol only thinks the problem is hidden, when in reality it is as obvious to others as if the person was wearing a sign around his or neck.

There are so many sources that offer information on the signs and symptoms of drug use that almost everyone has at one time or the other seen the list. A family member or friend who suspects that there is a problem may consult references in order to confirm any suspicions that may have arisen.

As a reminder, some of the signs are bloodshot eyes, changes in habits or personality, a strong body odor (and not necessarily from lack of attention to hygiene—some drugs actually cause one to emit a “chemical” smell), constantly needing or spending money, or dressing inappropriately for the season. There are other signs as well, and, information concerning these is available.

Once it is decided that a problem exists, it is very likely a family member or friend who will find the courage to confront (in a loving, non-threatening, positive manner, it is hoped) the person who is exhibiting the behavior associated with drug abuse and addiction.

It cannot be pretended that drug addiction does not exist. If it is thought that someone may be abusing drugs or alcohol, the person who is seeing the indications should not hesitate to speak up. A lost friendship or rift in family relations, hopefully temporary, may occur, but a life may be saved.
