Substance Abuse Treatment

Substance abuse treatment may require different tactics than that of other drug abuse treatments. If a person’s health is bad, that is going to have to be taken care of first, before any further drug rehabilitation can begin. Heart problems, blood pressure problems, breathing problems—all of these will have to be brought under control before anything else can be done.

Substance abuse almost always involves “hard” drugs—cocaine, heroin, ecstasy, “meth”, and, yes, marijuana, as well as others. These drugs almost always cause a faster and stronger addiction that any other drugs that are abused. “Meth,” for instance, stays in the body longer than any other drug. Cocaine, marijuana, or anything else may have long since gotten out of the system, but “meth,” like the Energizer® bunny, keeps going and going and going.

For this reason, the substance abuse treatment methods may be more intense and/or complicated than other methods. They will have to be adjusted to allow for this fact. The withdrawal symptoms and process that a user of “hard” drugs goes through are usually very painful and very hard to endure. Because of this, it may be necessary for a “rapid detox” method to be used.

The only advantage this method has is that the patient is asleep during the majority of the time, and so does not feel as much if any of the withdrawal symptoms. This is necessary, though, at times, so that further substance abuse treatment can have a better chance of working.
